During the four years of its first phase the MSP supported over
170 projects, partnering with government and civil society
organisations. The work was focussed in the three provinces of
KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Limpopo.
The purpose of the MSP has been to contribute to a strengthened
national AIDS response. Significant progress has been made in
several areas:
Improved collaboration: Many MSP projects have increased
collaboration between important stakeholders. For example,
interventions in community-based care have resulted in a greater
collaboration between government departments and civil society
organisations in the provinces.
Sustainability: Several projects achieved the goal of
sustainability through integration into government programmes. For
example the sexual assault curriculum produced by the Medical
Research Council has been adopted by the National Department of
Health (NDOH), and training of health professionals is underway in
eight provinces.
Strengthening the evidence base: Research projects have
improved the evidence base for policy and programming. For example,
the NDOH is reviewing the national palliative care policy drafted
by an MSP-funded organisation.
Strengthening monitoring and evaluation: Projects in three
provinces have strengthened M&E efforts. For instance, a
project in the Office of the Premier of KwaZulu Natal is working
towards an integrated M&E system to monitor the activities of
provincial departments of Health, Social Development and civil
society organisations.
