The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) is the
governing body of the country's AIDS response.
SANAC is led by the National Department of Health and includes
stakeholders from several government departments as well as civil
society organisations from 17 sectors, such as People Living with
HIV (PLHIV),

Women, Children etc. The role of SANAC is to
coordinate the efforts of all these partners to achieve the goals
of the HIV & AIDS and STI National Strategic Plan. These goals
aim to reduce new HIV infections by half, and to provide treatment
and care for 80% of South Africans affected by HIV and AIDS – by
2011.
The profound needs of the South African AIDS response, and the
complexity of ensuring that all partners are working together, mean
that building SANAC is a key priority.
The need to strengthen SANAC was recognised by Barbara Hogan and
assistance to this work formed a core component of the RRHF.
