The MSP has been supporting the South African response to HIV and
AIDS. Key projects have focused on civil society and public sector
programmes aimed at improving prevention, treatment, care and
support; strengthening the South African health system and
improving policy dialogue for vulnerable groups.

In November 2008, the MSP entered a new phase as the UK Department
for International Development (DFID) sought to assist the newly
appointed Minister of Health, Barbara Hogan. This Rapid Response
Health Fund (RRHF) was designed to provide rapid and flexible
support for the challenging task of reorienting South Africa's
response to HIV and AIDS, and revitalising the health services. In
May 2009, after the national elections, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi was
appointed Minister of Health. He welcomed the RRHF and has
continued to draw support from the programme.

The MSP is funded by DFID and managed by HLSP, a specialist health
consultancy. Over the past 20 years HLSP has established itself as
a leading provider of technical assistance and consulting services,
focusing on the creation and sustainability of quality health
systems and services.
